Decorate your home. It gives the illusion that your life is more interesting than it really is.
Charles M. Schulz
I like to stay home a lot. I like to do other things too, like decorate or build.
Many people decorate their homes with designer graffiti, even though most of them would probably have real graffiti scoured off the walls of their buildings.
Good food and a warm kitchen are what make a house a home. I always tried to make my home like my mother’s, because Mom was magnificent at stretching a buck when it came to decorating and food. Like a true Italian, she valued beautification in every area of her life, and I try to do the same.
You don’t have to paint your walls lime green just to try to have your home feel decorated. If you’re a classic dresser or preppy dresser or a modern dresser, you wear a lot of black – whatever it is – your home should reflect that as well.
In most people’s vocabularies, design means veneer. It’s interior decorating. It’s the fabric of the curtains and the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design.
I know that the last thing a book wants is to just sit around unread, serving as an element of interior decorating. So when I have people over, all they have to do is glance at my books, and I implore them to take a few home with them. If I am really ambitious, I pack books into boxes and donate them to prisons.
My favorite thing about decorating is mixing different periods and styles. If you have something that’s old, and you really do want to mix those styles, then you have to add something that’s obviously modern with it. You can’t put a kind of a mediocre thing in the middle.
